Weeble-Wobble

2021 | Design Across Scales Lab

[Public Space] [Installation]

Weeble-Wobble is a playful, deployable, and interactive public shading device developed in collaboration with Street Labs, NYC. This model was a prototype to test the design and fabrication of a system that could be deployed to support community engagement projects across New York City’s Open Streets programs.

The project is two pieces, a CNC milled weighted plywood base that allows users to rock and swivel, shading themselves or others while providing a stable base for the cantilevered canopy. The canopy was made to provide a large enough shade for Street Labs deployable street education and engagement programs.

This prototype has also been designed to carry a small suite of sensors to measure the installations impact. The sensor arrangement allows the measure of air temperature above and below the canopy, as well as a ring of sensors that collect information on the installations impact on shading throughout the day.

This prototype has also been designed to carry a small suite of sensors to measure the installations impact.

The prototype had six sensors, one above and one below the canopy, and four in a ring around the base.

The sensors above and below the canopy measure the immediate impact of providing shade. In this trial deployment the shade device reduced the air temperature significantly.

The four sensors around the installation collect information on the impact of the shade on the ground.
